Finding a used gun safe is pretty straightforward.  Most safe dealers will carry used gun safes as they take them in trade or buy them at auctions.  Buying from a safe dealer or locksmith can insure that the locking mechanism of the safe works properly.  They may also be able to deliver and install the unit for you, which could be a good idea considering that a biometrics safe can weigh over 1000 pounds.  Just pay to have someone install it instead of taking the risk of someone getting hurt moving that beast.

CraigsList is also another great place to find used gun safes.  Often you can buy cheap used gun safes Craigslist because people just seem to be willing to almost give the safes away just to have someone move them out of their house.  If you buy a safe here, you should try the locking mechanism several times to insure it works properly.  Then once you get it into your home, I recommend that you have a locksmith come and change the combination.  Call me paranoid, but you don’t want the seller to show up at your home when you are gone and use the old combination to steal all your guns and valuables.  Just like buying it from a dealer, I would really consider having someone move this safe into its final spot in your home.

Once you identify a used gun safe, make sure to do your homework on the make and model.  Buying cheap safes can be more of a headache than they are worth.  Looks for brands like Amsec, Baraska, Dakota Safe and Biovault to name a few of the high quality safes that you should be looking for.

The second reason for the purchase of a gun safe is the need to safely secure the firearms from risk of damage or theft. If you have made a sizable or expensive gun purchase, it makes sense to insure that investment from risk of fire damage, water damage, or theft. Gun safes can come prebuilt with these additional protections included in the safe.

For more budget minded individuals, metal gun cabinets can be a good alternative. These will often offer similar locks as lower-end safes, and can allow you to lock up your weapons from casual intrusion. The lower price for the units also eliminates the additional fire or theft protections. If this is not a concern it may be an excellent alternative.

Another scenario that occurs often enough is those gun owners that wish to showcase their collection for everyone to see. The best way to accomplish this is through the use of a high quality gun cabinet. Finely crafted, and uniquely designed cabinets offer little safety, but provide a beautiful setting to highlight your gun collection.

Most safes are made to keep your guns in a secure location so that prying eyes and hands cannot have access to them.  They allow for both admiration but protection, not just from thieves but from those not yet old enough to handle them properly as well.  Your children will learn the proper respect for the power of these weapons if they are kept in a safe place like this.

Now, a gun cabinet and a gun safe are definitely different animals.  A cabinet can come in a variety of styles, typically wood with glass doors.  The wood is usually made of oak, but can be a pine and stained to be most any color you prefer.  The glass work can also be very decorative with etched patterns and animals.  The cabinet can be placed in a corner as well, taking up less space and leaving you more room to hang one or more of your trophies.

The safe, on the other hand, looks like its name.  It typically has a combination lock with a handle and is made of metal.  These will usually have no decorative appeal to them.  While they are functional, you would be best served by having them in an out of the way location.  They are nothing to really look at.
