Why You Need Security Safes at Home

A few years ago there was a show on cable called “To Catch a Thief”.  It was about these two reformed burglars that would teach people how to secure their homes by filming themselves breaking in and stealing everything.  They would show these guys would get into the house and make off with tens of thousands of dollars in less than 10 minutes.  The guys then helped out the homeowners by installing new security systems, deadbolts and safes.  I was also amazed at how many people just left all kinds of valuables just lying around or in a simple underwear drawer.  How simple it was for the burglar to find and take it.

Everyone has something of value.  I don’t care if you are flat broke, you probably have something that if it is not financially valuable, it maybe personally or emotionally valuable (like home movies).  Maybe you are less concerned with it getting stolen and more concerned with it getting damaged in a fire or flood and not being able to replace it (like birth certificates or financial records).  Because everyone has a something of value, everyone should have security safes in their home.

Here is just a short list of items that you could use that high security safe for:

  • Personal documents such as birth certificates, passports, marriage licenses, wills, and health care directives are a simple few documents that are not necessary valuable, but they can be difficult, challenging, and possibly expensive to reproduce.  Putting these in firesafe box are an even better idea so that they are further protected against any threats.
  • Guns of all sorts should/must be stored where they can not be found by a child or criminal.  Putting them into something like an American security gun safe is an excellent way to protect both your gun collection and the people you love (your kids) and lastly keep it from the people you hate (criminals).  Buying a biometrics gun safe can also be a piece of mind that you can access your gun in an instant without having to remember a combination.  These high security safes are becoming much more common on the market today.
  • Because most people store valuables on their dresser or in a jewelry box, they are an easy target for criminals and can be quickly lost in a fire or flood.  Putting them into a proper home security safe will insure that you have done everything you can to protect them.  Properly installed home floor safes can be an excellent way to hide your valuables from even the most determined criminal.
  • Financial records have lifespans that they must be maintained for the IRS and other agencies.  It might seem to make sense to keep them in the basement, but studies have shown that every basement in America floods at least every 20 years!  Buy a waterproof safe to protect them against that flood.

I almost think that homes should be built with safes in them.  We put on 3rd car garages when we don’t need them, yet we leave our valuables unprotected.
