When you are doing your home renovation, why not consider going beyond the norm. Think creatively about what additions you would like to have in your DIY remodeling.

One addition that could come in handy is a home safe. Most people who do not have one wish that they did. A home safe provides added security. Even if you have a home alarm system, it is good to have a home vault.

Look for one with a fire rating, in the event of fire.

There are large variations in types. You might want a:

- Floor safe

- Wall safe

- Portable safe

Once you have decided on the variety of safe you want there will be other decisions to make:

- Large?

- Mid size?

- Smaller?

Alas, you still have more decisions to make. How do you want the safe to be opened:

- Lock and key

- Combination lock system

These are all important decisions. Some of them will be determined by your budget, but personal preference comes into it too. If you fear you might lose track of a safe key, then maybe a combination lock is for you.

Now we have to consider where you might want to keep the safe. If you have a portable safe and it is out in the open, that is not good. Someone could just walk away with it, if it was of such a weight to allow it to be carried.

So, consider where you might hide it.  A hidden safe is your best first line of defense.

Here is some advice: the bedroom closet might be the first place a jewel thief would look for valuables after the dresser.  A drawer safe properly mounted can be difficult for a burglar to access.  How about in the basement? You probably have an area which is not especially well lit, that might be perfect.  Another possibility is in the attic. If you do not need to access your valuables in the safe very often, the attic might be the place for you to put your safe. You could place attic insulation on top of it, so it would not even show.  The main level of the home is also an option, but keep in mind, the easier it is to get to, the more readily someone might find it.

When your finances permit, you could buy a safe that is physically installed into the structure of the home.  This could be in the form of a floor safe or gun wall safes.

Hiding your home safe is a good initial measure.
